History of Laco Watches

Laco watches started in the 1920s, founded by Frieda Lacher and Ludwig Hummel in Pforzheim. Back then, it was still called Lacher & Co. The name Laco came from the first syllables of the words. For years, they showed promising skill in making precise watches. Which is why they were selected as one of five manufacturers to create reliable timepieces for the German Luftwaffe.

Digging deeper, this is the reason why most Laco watches are made with aviation in mind. During the Second World War, German pilots were issued their own timepieces called Flieger watches. These watches had to meet strict design requirements due to the demanding nature of the job. With that said, only a few companies were given permission to manufacture these watches. As mentioned above, there were only five of them.

Modern Pilot Watches

It has been a long time since the war ended and the design specifications of Laco watches have become obsolete. Indeed, the original ones were specially made for the war and not for everyday wear. But to keep up with the times, Laco has tweaked their timepieces to fit the lifestyle of the modern gent.

Below are some of the recommended Laco watches that you should check out.

Best Laco Watches

Laco Augsburg Type A
2. Laco Augsburg Type A

1. Laco Augsburg Type A

Why is it good?

If you want a classic Flieger design with a Type A dial, look no further than the Laco Augsburg Type A. However, this model is tweaked to be worn casually, as the original Flieger Laco watches were specifically made for pilots.

Its dial looks a lot like those pilot watches that you would see during World War II. It prioritises minimalism and readability. Its Arabic numeral hour markers are large and in an easy-to-read font. Meanwhile, the 12 o’clock marker is the standard triangle with two dots. These are all applied with Superluminova C3 paint so you can still read the time even in low-light conditions.

As for the movement, it uses a Laco 21 movement, which is a basic Miyota 821A calibre. It is a three-hand movement that beats at a frequency of 21,600 bph. This means it ticks 6 times per second. As a bonus, it features hacking seconds so you can set the time more accurately.

To conclude, the Laco Augsburg Type A is one of the closest things you can get to Flieger Laco watches that were used by pilots during the war. While its movement and design were slightly modified, it still has the key characteristics that a Flieger watch has.

Laco Augsburg Type A Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Power reserve: 42 hours
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42
3. Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42

2. Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42

Why is it good?

There are different types of Flieger watch dials. One is the minimalistic Type A (like the previous watch), and one is the more complicated Type B. If you gravitate towards the latter, the Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42 is for you. It successfully encapsulates the look of that type of dial with a few modern tweaks.

On the dial, you would see two sets of Arabic numbers. The bigger ones on the outer layer indicate the minutes. Meanwhile, the smaller numerals that are closer to the centre are the hour markers. All of these markers, along with the hands, come in a greenish colour. This is due to the Superluminova C3 paint that was applied to them.

Like the Laco Augsburg Type A, this one also uses the Miyota 821A as its engine. It offers up to 42 hours of juice, a frequency of 21,600 bph and hacking seconds. You can expect the movement to be reliable and accurate enough for your daily needs.

With that said, the Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42 is a great iteration of the vintage B-Uhr Laco watches in the past. Whether you’re a history junkie or an aspiring pilot, you will never go wrong with this model.

Laco Type B Dial Aachen 42 Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Power reserve: 42 hours
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Paderborn Type B
4. Laco Paderborn Type B

3. Laco Paderborn Type B

Why is it good?

The Laco Paderborn Type B is very similar to the other Laco watches with a Type B dial. In fact, it is very hard to distinguish it from the previous watch if you’re basing on looks alone. It has the same format with a minute tracker on the outer layer of the dial and the hour markers on the inner part. However, there are a few differences that we should take note of.

On the dial, the only difference you’ll notice are the dots that align the hour markers. Apart from that, its stainless steel case features a dark sandblasted finish instead of matte. Furthermore, its brown leather strap comes in a darker hue compared to the Aachen.

Inside, the Paderborn Type B uses a different movement called the Laco 24. Basically, it is the ETA 2824-2 (Elaboré) calibre. It can power the watch for up to 38 hours and it beats at a frequency of 28,800 bph. Additionally, it features manual hand winding and hacking seconds. Overall, this movement is considered as a reliable workhorse by many watch enthusiasts.

The Laco Paderborn Type B is definitely a model you should consider if you’re attracted to the Type B or Navigator dial.

Laco Paderborn Type B Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm

Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A
5. Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A

4. Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A

Why is it good?

If you know how to speak German, you probably already know that “Blaue” means blue in English. And as its name suggests, the Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A is the one for you if you want something more colourful.

This model uses the Type A dial, meaning it retains the minimalistic layout of vintage Laco watches. It displays Arabic numerals and rectangular indices as minute markers which are coated with Superluminova C3. And as its highlight feature, the dial is made with a blue sunray pattern. This feature makes the watch stand out without being too loud.

When it comes to performance, it uses the ETA 2824-2 (Elaboré) calibre. This is the same movement used for the Laco Paderborn Type B watch. As mentioned before, it is a reliable movement that provides up to 38 hours of power reserve and beats at 28,800 bph. It also features manual hand winding and hacking seconds.

In my opinion, the Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A is great for fans of the Type A dial who are tired of the usual black colourway. This timepiece’s blue hue definitely stands out from the rest of the Laco watches.

Laco Munster Blaue Stunde Type A Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Power reserve: 38 hours
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Valencia
6. Laco Valencia

5. Laco Valencia

Why is it good?

Laco watches are known for dominating the skies. But for people who prefer the sea, the Laco Valencia is for you. In fact, it belongs to the Navy collection of the brand. And according to Laco, the collection is where “maritime tradition meets modern technology”.

The dial of the Laco Valencia was inspired by the classic design prescribed by the German Marine Observatory. And like aviation watches, readability is a top priority for the design. The dial only contains the Arabic numeral hour markers in a simple font. Apart from that, there is a barely-there date window just above the 6 o’clock position.

Instead of just the hour markers, the Laco Valencia’s whole face is applied with lume. The Superluminova C3 luminous material ensures that you can easily read the time even when you’re stuck in a place without good lighting.

Inside, the watch is powered by the Miyota 821A automatic movement. This is the same calibre used in the previous Laco watches on this list. As mentioned, it provides 42 hours of power, and a hacking seconds feature. This basic movement is more than enough for your everyday needs.

Laco Valencia Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Power reserve: 42 hours
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Sylt German Pilot Chronograph
7. Laco Sylt German Pilot Chronograph

6. Laco Sylt German Pilot Chronograph

Why is it good?

Here is another model that diverts from the usual pilot Laco watches. The Laco Sylt German Pilot Chronograph is a chronograph watch that has added timer functions. People who are looking for a reliable way to time sports should check this out as each Laco Sylt watch is made by experienced watchmakers on site in Laco’s factory in Pforzheim.

In spite of being a chronograph watch, the Laco Sylt is very legible. It has three small sub-dials on the left side. A tiny window date is on the other side. Meanwhile, the Arabic numeral hour markers are made with a metallic blue colour. This helps them stand out from the white background.

Furthermore, the Laco Sylt uses the Miyota OS10 as its heart. It is a chronograph watch movement with no jewels in it. Apart from that, Miyota claims the accuracy rating of this calibre to be +/-20 seconds per month. Indeed, you can never go wrong with a quartz watch if you’re after accuracy.

If you’re a chronograph lover who wants an easy-to-read timepiece, this model should be on your radar. Apart from the attractive design, its precision is something that you will find handy in different situations.

Laco Sylt German Pilot Chronograph Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Quartz
  • Power reserve: n/a
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Paderborn Erbstück
8. Laco Paderborn Erbstück

7. Laco Paderborn Erbstück

Why is it good?

Fan of anything vintage? There’s no doubt that you will love this model. The Laco Paderborn Erbstück puts a twist to your favourite Type B dial watch. As seen from the photo above, it imitates the look of a vintage pilot timepiece including the patina.

Moving on to the dial, the format looks exactly like the Laco Paderborn. To be more accurate, it looks like the Laco Paderborn that has seen a lot of experience. Instead of white, the hour and minute markers come in a rust-like colour. But don’t worry, it still has the Superluminova C3 so you can still see it in the dark.

Apart from that, the stainless steel case bears a few artificial chips and dents all over. In my opinion, the execution of the design was made as if it’s natural. Furthermore, its brown leather strap completes the aesthetic. Its distressed design looks old and goes well with the rest of the watch.

If I didn’t know better, I would think that this watch was worn during World War II. Apart from the same dial layout of the original Flieger watches, the patina and road-worn design are very convincing. With that said, this is the perfect watch for vintage lovers who are into the rugged and worn-out look.

Laco Paderborn Erbstück Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Power reserve: 38 hours
  • Water resistance: 50m
Laco Detroit Type C
9. Laco Detroit Type C

8. Laco Detroit Type C

Why is it good?

The Laco Detroit Type C is another one for the chronograph lovers. But this time, it features a more modern approach when it comes to design. Another difference is while the Laco Sylt focuses on a minimalistic aesthetic, this one goes the opposite direction.

Compared to other Laco watches on this list, the Laco Detroit Type C has a cluttered design. But that doesn’t mean it’s hard to read. In fact, the positioning of the elements is still well-thought of. Thus, the face is interesting overall. It also comes in a black NATO strap to give it a sportier vibe.

There are three sub-dials positioned near the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock markers. Meanwhile, the date window beside 3 o’clock displays not only one, but three dates — the date today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Apart from that, the dial features a few round patterns that resemble the screws on the body of an aeroplane.

Lastly, it uses the same Miyota OS10 calibre that the Sylt is powered on. This quartz chronograph movement features a Quick Reset (by Heart Cam Reset System) and a Click Feeling Push Button Handling. Apart from that, it has an accuracy rating of +/- 20 seconds per month according to Miyota.

Laco Detroit Type C Specs:

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm
  • Movement: Quartz
  • Power reserve: n/a
  • Water resistance: 50m

It is known that Laco watches are made in Germany. With that said, it is inevitable for the brand to make Bauhaus-style models such as the Laco Wittenberg 40. Minimalism and simplicity are the focal points of making the design of this model.

As expected, the dial of this model only contains the essentials. These are the Arabic numeral hour markers which are easy to read, small minute trackers at the outer part of the dial, and an unobtrusive date window at the bottom. The hands are made with metallic blue to make it easy to spot and at the same time, add a pop of colour.

When it comes to performance, don’t expect anything less than German efficiency. It uses the refined automatic Laco 92 movement, which is basically an ETA 2892-A2. This automatic calibre uses 21 jewels and beats at a frequency of 28,800 bph. It can also power the watch for up to 42 hours. Overall, this is a capable movement that you can trust in your everyday needs.

Laco Monte Carlo
11. Laco Monte Carlo

10. Laco Monte Carlo

Why is it good?

The chronograph Laco watches on this list are made with quartz. But if you’re looking for something mechanical, the Laco Monte Carlo is one of your choices. This sporty timepiece will surely meet your everyday needs.

Like the previous chronograph watch, the Monte Carlo’s sub-dials are located at the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions. In particular, these are the minute and hour counters, the central second hand counter, and the running sub-second dial. At the right side are the day and date display.

For the movement, this timepiece uses the automatic chronograph Laco 50. This is based on the ETA 7750 (Elaboré) which is one of the most recognisable and popular chronograph watch movements. In fact, it is also used in some models of Breitling, Tag Heuer, and other big Swiss brands. Furthermore, it has a total of 25 jewels and it beats at a frequency of 28,800 bph. Why is it good?

It is a given that Laco watches are dependable when it comes to durability. The same goes for the Laco Squad Aleutian Blue. In fact, the Squad series meets high standards and requirements when it comes to outdoor use.

When it comes to the design, the Laco Squad deviates from the previous Laco watches. Instead of the classic aviator style, this one looks like a diver. In fact, it has a black bezel that you can use to time activities. The dial itself is made with a gradient blue that darkens into black as you go to the bottom. This represents the depths of the ocean.

Moreover, this watch has a higher water resistance compared with the others. Instead of just 50m, it can handle up to 200m. This makes it appropriate for diving. Apart from that, its bracelet features a folding clasp with a safety clip so you wouldn’t have to worry about unclasping it during activities.

Laco Watches Bell X-1
13. Laco Bell X-1

12. Laco Bell X-1

Why is it good?

The Laco Bell X-1 is a contemporary pilot watch for the modern man. While it follows a few design cues from the vintage Laco watches, it still has a modern feel to it. It combines both the high legibility of flight panels in the ’40s and the technology of the 21st century.

Starting with the dial, the most noticeable difference is the hour markers. While the other versions have a complete set of Arabic numerals from 1 to 12, this one only displays 3, 6, 9, and 12. But to compensate with having fewer markers, its font size became bigger. Apart from that, there is also a minute tracker on the outer part of the dial. These are all applied with Superluminova C3 for maximum durability in low light conditions.

Under the hood, it uses the same Miyota 821A calibre. It has a total of 21 jewels and runs at a frequency of 21,600 bph. Apart from that, it can power the watch for up to 42 hours. Overall, this movement is a reliable machine that offers excellent shock resistance and excellent timekeeping that will serve you for years.

All things considered, the Laco Bell X-1 is one of the modern Laco watches around. Its design is perfect for those who want a modern twist to the pilot watch.

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case dimension: 42mm

  • Power reserve: 42 hours
