Many of the world’s greatest golfers gathered in St. Louis, Missouri this August for the 100th PGA Championship. We can be sure they were wearing some of the world’s finest luxury watches. Here’s a look at a few of the best timepieces that grace the wrists of the golfing world’s elite.
Tiger Woods from TAG Heuer to Rolex
The watch you’ll most see on the wrist of Tiger Woods is the Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller. This model combines two of his loves (after golf!) — luxury watches and undersea exploration. A California native, Tiger grew up by the ocean and is a longtime enthusiast of scuba and free diving.
Tiger was wearing Rolex watches long before he became a brand ambassador in 2011. The first watch he sported after the association was a Rolex Day-Date II 218239 President. With a price of around $35,000, the watch has an 18-carat white-gold case with a fluted bezel and is notable for its day and date windows on the dial.
Tiger was an ambassador for TAG Heuer from 2002 to 2011, when the Swiss watchmakers dropped Woods over his much-publicized personal problems. During their association, Tiger sported several luxury TAG Heuer watches and was behind six limited-edition namesake watches in the Link line. Each of the Tiger Woods Link watches are accented by red-burgundy, Tiger’s favorite color.
Rory McIlroy and Omega
The Northern Irish golfer is a brand ambassador for Omega. In that role, he’s touted the golf-inspired Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf, a variation of the famed Seamaster with a sun-brushed dial and eye-catching color accents. While the best-known watch in the line has green highlights, Rory’s favorite is an Aqua Terra with an orange-and-black NATO strap. Rory’s choice is a stainless-steel beauty with a horizontal pattern on the dial and a wave pattern on the back.
Sergio Garcia in Black with Omega
Another brand ambassador for Omega, Sergio Garcia seems to have a special affinity for the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. The watch is known as the “Black Black” for good reason. It has a black brushed-ceramic case, matte black dial, and a black nylon-coated strap. The Spanish golfer is also partial to his Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black,” another stunning black ceramic timepiece. A third notable watch in Garcia’s collection is the Constellation Double Eagle, a limited edition chronograph in red gold with a sturdy rubber strap.
Dustin Johnson and Hublot
Dustin Johnson serves as a brand ambassador for Hublot. He’s been spotted out and about sporting watches from the Big Bang Unico collection. Modern, bold and impressive, the Big Bang Unico line has sturdy scratch-resistant cases, skeleton dials, rhodium-plated hands and chronograph flybacks. Johnson was central to the rollout of the leading-edge Big Bang Unico Golf. The ultra-light timepiece has a case constructed of an amalgam of aluminum and carbon fiber, while it’s one-click system allows you to swap out the leather-and-rubber strap for a Velcro band.
Phil Mickelson and Rolex
Phil Mickelson likes to go formal with Rolex. He’s generally seen wearing his favorite manual-wind Rolex Cellini Danaos, an elegant rose-gold model with Arabic numbers gracing a white dial and finished with a black leather strap. He often wears the lightweight watch on the course. Off the greens, the three-time Masters winner sports a variety of Rolex watches. One of his favorites is a Rolex Day-Date President with Roman numerals on a silver dial. At black-tie events, Mickelson has worn a striking Rolex Submariner.
Justin Thomas Cheats on Hublot?
A few days after taking the title at the World Golf Championships in 2017, Justin Thomas landed an endorsement deal with Hublot. He joined the campaign to launch the Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf. But it looks like Thomas still has feelings for his first watch love — Rolex. Though under contract with Hublot, Justin hoisted a trophy at the Honda Classic 2018 wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master! Perhaps he just couldn’t quit the Yacht-Master’s oyster case and platinum rotating bezel. He could have longed for the turquoise accents on the rhodium dial. Whatever the case, we imagine Hublot wasn’t too pleased to see their ambassador sporting the timepiece of a competitor.
Jordan Spieth Has a Favorite Rolex
Does Jordan Spieth wear a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer II to match his green Masters jacket? The watch’s orange hands and white “polar” dial do perfectly complement the color of the esteemed champion wear. One of the most-popular Rolex timepieces on the market, the Explorer is a larger-than-usual watch with a 42mm oyster case that gives it a sporty look. But its brushed oyster bracelet adds a sense of elegance that makes the versatile watch appropriate for formal affairs. That is probably why we’ve seen him wearing it at both events and in more-casual settings.
